PART NINETEEN

TOGETHER

Before: Sophie was crying as her brother held her close to him, offering as much comfort as he possibly could and ignoring the fact that she was nude. Her clothes, in tatters, on the floor by the bed; ripped to shreds and no longer wearable. The pair of them hadn’t been here long, trapped in this Hell. Long enough to know that they weren’t going anywhere soon and that there was nothing they could do about it. David had told Sophie he’d do all he could to get them out of there but - other than saying the words - he had little idea as to how to actually go about it.

Jason walked into the bedroom via the open door. As he did so, he tapped his wristwatch and said, ‘Time is up.’ He laughed when he noticed them hugging. ‘Look at you two all cuddled up and shit. Kind of sweet. Creepy and slightly incestuous on one hand but, on the other, nice to see you sticking together in your hour of need.’

David looked at him with hate in his eyes as he parted from Sophie who, scared, returned to the bed. ‘Don’t you fucking touch her,’ David warned him.

Jason paused a moment before he started to cruelly laugh. ‘You can relax,’ he said as he continued to chuckle. ‘I prefer my partners to be willing. She’s all for Michael. Not my play thing.’ He looked her up and down. ‘Besides - I prefer them to look a little more… Well… We needn’t go into it.’ He changed the subject, ‘It’s you I have come for. Time for you to go to work.’ Jason turned and walked back towards the door. He only stopped when he realised he wasn’t being followed. With a look back over his shoulder, he said, ‘Heel boy…’

David looked at Sophie. There was so much to say but clearly now wasn’t the time. He shrugged and followed Jason curious to know what was on his mind.

As Jason led the way down the hallway, towards the stairs, he explained, ‘You are going to go to town. Carolyne, downstairs, has a little book for you with some personality traits of people we are looking for… You are going to be driven around and it will be your job to find people matching these personality traits… When you have found them, you need to convince them to come and play next week… The exact date is in the notebook.’

‘Play a game? What?’

‘You’re just going to challenge them to get from one point to another. That’s it. If they succeed, they win money. Again, the exact figure is in the notebook. It’s all very simple.’ Jason stopped walking a moment as he remembered something. David also stopped. ‘One thing… It’s been a week since we took you so people have reported you and your sister as missing. If you’re recognised out there, by someone who might have seen your picture or someone who might have known you before you belonged to us… We have fake identification for you to show.
